Dear Parents & Student-Athletes,

Welcome to the 2010 Hoop Phi Hoop Travel  Basketball season. Please take the time to read this information thoroughly.

A Note from Jay Lee

(Let’s keep it real)

We as parents are working hard everyday to make sure our kids have what they need to become good citizens.  We need to pull together and make it happen for our kids by helping them create a plan that will work for them.  Parents let me just keep it real. Basketball coaches are not recruiting basketball players in the south like they use to.  This is a football state.  College coaches start recruiting basketball players starting in the 8th grade. They follow them through high school.  The problem is that kids in middle school are not learning the fundamental of basketball.  So, when they get in high school they don’t have a clue what they need to know to go to school on a scholarship.  Kids’ dreams are cut short due to the fact that they are not getting the proper coaching.  We also have to take in consideration that in most middle schools, the coaches we have coaching our kids have no clue how to coach or how to teach basketball.  The skill level out of state is so much better due to the fact that they have more Gym's so the kids can play all year round.  Here in South Florida it is too hot to play outside and our gyms are taken up by other activities.  As parents, you have the job to make sure your child is getting prepared for his or her future.  I know there are several travel teams out there but I can only speak for what we do.  We have a rule that each player has to maintain a 2.5 gpa.  This is the bare minimum for grades.  They can not play with a 2.0 gpa.  That’s not good enough.  We have to keep in mind that the goal is to get a scholarship to go to school not just to play basketball.  This is what we try to instill in our players.  We give them the (What if you don’t get a sports scholarship) you still go to college for the education.  Hoop Phi Hoop is willing to help make that plan come true.  One important thing we want them to remember: no matter if it is on or off the basketball court, or in; education, basketball, or life, "YOU NEED TO FINISH".   "Kids will be kids", but it is our responsibility to make sure we teach them how to become mature adults and the importance of discipline & teamwork.  Discipline & Teamwork takes you further in life than anything else.  Positive people make positive things happen.  If we change the attitude, we change the person.
